"Tips for Cleaning Out Your Closet"

by Julie Kaufman
If you clean out your closet every year, or better yet, twice a year when the seasons change, it won’t be a huge hassle.  If you haven’t done it lately, seize the day!  Here are a few tips to help you.

1. Be systematic.  Start at one end and go all the way through to the other end. Don’t overlook shoes, purses, scarves, belts and underwear.

2. Examine each garment. If it is stained, torn, missing a button, faded or pilled – get rid of it.  If fixable, put it in a pile to be fixed.

3. Try the garment on – does it fit? Does it look good? Is it in style? Is it something you would willingly wear? If yes, put it back in place neatly. If no, decide whether it goes in the alterations pile (which you will take to your dressmaker) or the give-away pile, or the pile to take shopping with you to complete an outfit.

4. If you haven’t worn it in two years or more, pay special attention if you’re thinking of keeping it. When will you really wear it?

5. If it’s something you’re keeping, figure out the whole outfit. Did you just give away the sweater for those pants? If so, what else could you wear with them? Make sure you have all pieces to an outfit, and that all fit and are in good condition.

6. When you are finished, make a list of what you need. Also, take the alterations pile to the dressmaker right away.  Get the Goodwill stuff out of your house quickly. Don’t second-guess yourself or you will just end up with it back in your closet for another year.

Perhaps this is too big a task for you to do on your own, or you’re not sure what to keep and what to toss?  I’d love to help.  Many of my clients consider closet editing to be the most valuable service I offer.
